Millions of small business and non-profit Websites are out of date and are in need of an update to best practices of the day. Many millions more have yet to get started in the Web space. Starting, January 1, 2010 you are invited to participate in the Web Pro Challenge, an event that will be a true test of Web professional proficiency and talent while giving back to the community by developing a fully functional site and or a Mobile widget or Web application for an organization in need.

The Web Pro Challenge is an opportunity for industry professionals, students and teachers to:
- Gain industry recognition

- Give something back to the community by designing, developing and promoting developing a fully functional site and or a Web application, Mobile widget for an organization in need

WOW believes that today's Web professionals can and must:
- Balance their skill sets with an ability to analyze a situation and
produce a viable solution.
- Apply technology and design development techniques and Web business strategies appropriately for the circumstances.
When the Web Pro Challenge is officially kicked off January 1, 2010 registered teams will receive the official challenge overview and details PDF. The official challenge overview and details PDF will provide you with:
- A complete overview of the challenge requirements and our reccomended best practices that will assit you in creating a Website, Mobile widget or Web application.
The Web Pro Challenge will be divided into the following categories designed to test contestants' artistic, creative, technical and business knowledge and skills:
- Client Interview - Competing teams will be asked to conduct a client interview of a small business or nonprofit of your choosing.
- Process - Competing teams will be asked to document their client analysis and processes for submission at the end of the challenge.
- Design and Development - Competing teams will be asked to design and develop a fully functional site, Mobile Widget or Web application and or to satisfy the needs/requirements of the client, using a multitude of design and development tools of their choosing .
- Multimedia - Competing teams will be asked to incorporate a YouTube style multimedia presentation component for submission of the challenge.
- Web Business - Competing teams will be asked to create and develop Web marketing materials to enhance the designated small business or non profit's Web marketing strategy.
- Presentation - Competing teams will be asked to create and develop a final presentation, including workflow, processes and supporting materials others may learn from their experiences.
- Assessment - The work completed will be rated on the basis of a rubric developed by the non-profit professional association, WOW (see www.webprofessionals.org) and judged by a panel of experts selected from the Web professional community.
Web professionals, students and teachers are invited and encouraged to register to compete, with the final outcome being a fully functional Web site and/or Web application or Mobile Widget for a small business or non-profit organization of your choosing
Registration Overview and Requirements:
- Select your small business or non-profit organization to support.
- Choose your challenge theme, (design a Website, Widget or Web Application) assemble a team and get started.
- Participants will submit the name of their team and the names of 2-3 (min-max) Web Professionals and or students and teachers with identified roles, including Web designer, Web developer, and Project team leader or instructor.
- Teams will designate a team leader or instructor as a single point of contact.
- Teams
will be required to review and agree to terms and conditions listed on the Web Pro
Challenge.
- Teams will be required to create a functional website, Widget or Web application on a server
of their choosing as outlined by the Web Pro Challenge Committee in the “Statement of Work.”
- Teams
will be required to submit a URL with supporting documentation and links to supporting
files (e.g., PSD, FLA, etc.).
- Each team will be required to submit a link to a video presentation (not longer than 5 minutes) summarizing their processes and rationale for their approach to the project.
- Teams will have access to an online discussion forum to post and review concerns, issues, and FAQ’s.
Note: Within 2 business days of registration each participating team (via the designated team member contact) will receive a PDF of the “Statement of Work” to be performed.
This is a 150-day challenge event with the following schedule:

Registration
Registration opens January 1, 2010. Register at anytime up until May 12, 2010. All work must be submitted on May 15, 2010 (see Submission Phase). Competing Teams may register by following this link:

- Within 2 business days of registration competing teams will receive
a PDF containing Web Pro Challenge documentation and “Statement of Work.”
- Teams will assess the client's needs and create a storyboard presentation outlining process, tools to be used, design and development methodologies, overall business strategy and project deployment.
Note: This planning stage is a part of the contest, and teams will be required to record, in a 3-5 minute video, details of their process for later submission to the judges.
Planning and Development Phase
Registered teams will have access to a pre-recorded “Client Interview&rdquo (date and time to be announced).
The purpose of this Client Interview is to provide teams with a better understanding of the client organization and its vision for the "Statement of Work" provided to challengers upon registration.
Submission Phase (when, where and how your work is to be submitted)
- Submission deadline is May 15, 2010.
- Teams submit the URL and links to supporting documentation, including but not limited to:
a.) A presentation using a video clip of not more than 3-5 minutes describing client needs, creating a storyboard outlining process, tools to be used, design and development methodologies, and overall business strategy and project deployment.
b.) All supporting materials and source files provided in a separate folder on the website (for example, Photoshop files, not just GIF, JPEG or PNG files, so that client can modify them in the future).
c.) All code/scripting documented, so the intern can maintain the site.
Judgment Phase
- The Web Pro Challenge will be rated by a rubric developed by the non-profit professional association, WOW, and judged by a panel of experts selected from the Web professional community.
- The panel of judges will analyze the results using established criteria by the committee to determine a winner in each of three categories (see below).
- Winners will be announced on the WebProChallenge.org web site blogs, and in a press release distributed to the technology and mainstream press.

Eligibility:
Web Pro Challenge is open free of charge to aspiring and practicing
Web professionals, including students and teachers, independent Web professionals and freelancers, Web design
and development teams and firms, Web publishing and advertising organizations, Web marketing agencies, and students and teachers worldwide.
Challenge Requirements:
- Participants will be required to register a team name and individual team members, and designate a single point of contact for potential communication between the contest committee and the project leader.
- Participants will be required to provide Web Pro Challenge and its sponsors written permission to publish the name of the individuals/teams involved and their Web work (including photos and bios, if requested) for promotional consideration.
- Participants will provide Web Pro Challenge and its sponsors and benefactors written permission for "non commercial" copyright and exclusive use of its design, development and copyright.
- Participants will provide and will submit all supporting materials so that the web site can be supported by the designated small business or non-profits.
Legalese:
- Participants will be required to follow the contest requirements as outlined in the contest documentation.
- Participants will provide Web Pro Challenge and its sponsors and benefactors a signed and faxed copy of a "hold harmless" and liability waiver, holding the creators, sponsors, benefactors and participants of this challenge harmless from any potential conflicts.
- Web Pro Challenge organizers reserve the right to eliminate and or disqualify for good cause any team or contestants at any time, without reason and without notice. Web pro Challenge and its promoters and sposnors also reserve the right to cancel this contest at anytime, for any reason and without notice.
